Trane Thermostat Wiring

Step 1

Choose the thermostat that best fits your needs and preferences. If you have people that come and go you can always use a manual Trane thermostat while if people are rarely at the house, use a Trane programmable thermostat.

Step 2

Connect the thermostat wires. Before anything, mark the wires, whether you are changing or replacing the thermostat. The red wire is usually the power wire which is connected to the R terminal of the transformer. The yellow wire goes to the coil on the cooling contractor while the other end goes to the Y terminal on the thermostat.

The relay for the electric heat or the gas valve, on the other hand, is connected with a white wire. Ensure you also connect the green wire to the fan relay and further connected to the G terminal on the thermostat. Most programmable thermostats require a common wire which is usually black and is usually connected to the common side of the secondary winding of the transformer all the way to the thermostat where it is connected to the C terminal.

Step 3

Connect all the wires as mentioned in step 3 except for the orange wire which is connected to the reversing valve.

Step 4

Turn the circuit breaker on then check to see if it’s operational.

Trane Thermostat Troubleshooting

Step 1

Touch the SYSTEM button on the thermostat after whichyou will proceed to press HEAT. However, if nothing is happening, ensure that the heat setting on the thermostat is higher than the temperature of the room.

Step 2

Set the system to “cool” by pressing on the SYSTEM key on the thermostat. If nothing is happening, ensure that the thermostat heat setting is lower than room temperature.

Step 3

Look around the circuit breaker to restart it. This can be done by pushing the breaker on to reset it. To switch on the cooling and the heating system, turn on the power switch and thereafter ensure the furnace door is closed.

Step 4

Be patient and wait for 5 minutes before you turn on the thermostat or changing the temperature setting.

Step 5

To ensure that the compressor for short cycle protection is on, ensure you wait for at least 5 minutes after which you can allow the system to restart if COOL ON or HEAT ON appears on the touchscreen display. This is to prevent any damage to the compressor.
