How to Wire a White Rodgers Thermostat device to a Heat Pump System

The White Rodgers range of thermostats is being manufactured by the Emerson Electric company. A white Rodgers heat pump thermostat enables the user to switch or shift from a refrigerated source of heat to an emergency electric heat source. The cost of the residential heat pump systems Is almost 30 to 40 less when it comes overall running cost. The low voltage wires of the heat pump thermostat allow supplying the power to both the inside and outside air conditioning units along with using the refrigerant as a heat source. In case of the emergency heat setting, the unit supplies the power to the inside unit only.

Now, there has been a lot of discussion on the topic all over the internet, as there have been multiple scenarios in which the user have faced the problem. But in reality, the steps to wire the White Rodgers thermostat device are very simple. The steps are as follows:

1.) Firstly turn off the circuit breaker or simply disconnect the fuse for the inside controls of the heat pump system. The real/correct fuse or circuit breaker uses the “Furnace” or “Air Handler” text\label. The Fuse with the label “heat Pump” or “Air conditioner” is the controls the outside unit of the system.

2.) Now, Distinguish\separate the wires that are exiting the wall. Strip almost ¼ from the wires with the wire strippers.
Note: please remember to keep the ends of the wire straight.

3.) Now, Insert the wire with the red color into the “R” terminal with the Needle nose pliers. Use a slotted screwdriver in order to tighten the screws . The wire delivers the electricity to the thermostat device from the transformer.

4.) Insert the wire with the color orange into the the “B” terminal with with the needle nose pliers. Use the slotted screwdriver in order to tighten the screws . This is the terminal that actually gets connected to the primary heating stage and turns on the outside unit’s reversing valve on. The reversing valve plays an effective role while determining the direction of the refrigerator’s flow.

5.) Insert the wire with the color white into the “W” or “AUX” terminal with the needle nose pliers.Use the slotted screwdriver in order to tighten the screws. This terminal connects to the emergency heating stage, Which uses the electrical heating strip for the heating process. Some of the model s actually use the word “AUX” instead of “W”.

6.) Insert the wire with the color yellow into the “Y” terminal with needle nose pliers. Use the slotted screwdrivers in order to tighten the screws. This terminal has the control over the cooling process.

7.) Insert the wire with the color green into the “C” terminal with needle nose pliers . Use the slotted screwdrivers to tighten the screws. This terminal has the control over the inside unit’s fan motor.

8.) Insert the wire with the black or grey color into the “C” terminal with the needle nose pliers. Use the slotted screwdrivers in order to tighten the screws. This terminal provides the common leg, usually called as “Neutral” in Thermostats.

9.) Insert the light blue colored wire into the “I” terminal, if it is equipped with the needle nose pliers. Use the Slotted screwdriver to tighten the screws. This terminal has the control over thermostat malfunction light.

10.) Insert the Pink colored wire into the “O” terminal if it is equipped with needle nose pliers. Use the slotted screwdriver in order to tighten the screws. This terminal has the control over the reversing valve for the cooling cycle(Most heat pump manufacturers do not use it). This Air handler wiring system states whether the reversing valve energizes during each cycle of heating or cooling.

In the above-mentioned article, we have explained the process to wire a White Rodgers thermostat device in a correct manner, I hope this article was helpful.
That’s all, thanks!!!
